Safe Routes to School Completed & Ongoing Projects

In partnership with local non-profit WeBelongPDX, SRTS led two field trips where students learned about route planning and public transit etiquette. This provided many elementary and middle school students with their first experience on a TriMet Bus.

SRTS connected with the Walking Classroom, an organization that provides educational podcasts for grades 3-8. Through Centennial School District’s Title I qualification, SRTS secured a sdonation of two sets of 30 MP3 players at no cost. These will be used in a pilot program at two of our SUN afterschool sites.

SRTS hosted Portland City Counselor Candace Avalos and her staff for a Safe Routes to School tour near Parklane Elementary and Oliver Middle School SRTS showcased our traffic-calming infrastructure and highlighted areas needing improvement, such as missing sidewalks, accessibility issues, and encampments.

In partnership with Metropolitan Family Services, we served on the planning committee for a Back-to-School Resource Fair at Parklane Park. The event drew nearly 400 families and featured seveeral transportation organizations including BikeLoudPDX, RideConnection, and Oregon Walks.

Applied for and awarded a $4,936 grant for Crossing Guard Program at 9 Centennial school sites.
