Suicide Prevention, Handbook, & Resources

Suicide Prevention Process, Handbook, & Resources

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death in children and young adults ages 15-24, and the 4th leading cause of death in children ages 10-14. To aid in the prevention of such tragedy, The Centennial School District utilizes a multi-faceted approach within our Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) structures that include prevention, intervention and postvention.

Senate Bill 52, also known as “Adi’s Act,” was passed in Oregon in 2019. This legislation requires school districts to develop and publicly post the school district’s plan for suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention response activities, beginning no later than the start of the 2020/2021 school year.

Centennial School District:

  1. recognizes that physical, mental health, social, behavioral, and emotional health is an integral component of a student’s educational outcomes,
  2. further recognizes that suicide is a leading cause of death among young people,
  3. has an ethical responsibility to take a proactive approach in preventing deaths by suicide, and acknowledges the school’s role in providing an environment that is sensitive to individual and societal factors that place youth at greater risk for suicide and one which helps to foster positive youth development,
  4. sees this fitting within our Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) structures and not in isolation,
  5. has equity as the foundation of our work and is “the idea that EACH and EVERY learner will receive the necessary resources they need individually to thrive in Oregon’s schools no matter what their national origin, race, gender, sexual orientation, differently abled, first language or other distinguishing characteristic,” and,
  6. all students, especially those historically underserved and marginalized, should receive instruction, support and resources which are culturally relevant and responsive so as to create a culture that nurtures positive mental health.
