STANDARD RESPONSE PROTOCOL
The Standard Response Protocol is a set of research-based actions/drills designed to prepare our schools for emergency situations.

Throughout the school year, all students and staff members participate in various drills to educate students on the five possible actions of the Standard Response Protocol. These actions are:

  • Hold – is followed by the Directive: "In Your Room or Area" and is the protocol used when hallways need to be kept clear of occupants.
  • Secure – is followed by the Directive: "Get Inside. Lock Outside Doors" and is the protocol used to safeguard people within the building. Exterior doors remain locked, classroom doors are secured, and learning continues as usual.
  • Lockdown  is followed by "Locks, Lights, Out of Sight" and is the protocol used to secure individual rooms and keep occupants quiet and in place.
  • Evacuate – is used to move people from one location to a different location in or out of the building.
  • Shelter – Depending on the hazard (i.e. tornado, hazmat, earthquake), certain strategies are deployed for group and self-protection.

One of our safety objectives is for each school to practice the standard response protocol drills periodically throughout each school year. In order for all stakeholders to be trained on the Standard Response Protocol, we work collaboratively with Portland and Gresham Police Departments and other emergency service providers to ensure we are following the same emergency protocols and procedures in our schools.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROTOCOL
In an emergency, the Centennial School District follows a standard response protocol that was developed by the I LOVE U GUYS FOUNDATION.

The “I Love U Guys” Foundation serves the lives of students, administrators, public safety experts, families, and first responders through the development and training of school and community safety and family reunification programs. Programs have been implemented by over 30,000 schools, agencies and organizations across the United States, Canada and 11 other countries.

The Foundation serves as a conduit for the work and experience of administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts, families, and first responders. This collaborative work is data-driven, researched, and based on experience and best practices.

All of the programs are available at no cost. Not even an email address.

In a nutshell, the Foundation will:

  • Research the issues
  • Identify the missing pieces
  • Develop the programs
  • Collaborate and refine
  • Create educational materials
  • Advocate the programs
  • Train kids, cops, and educators

HOW TO REPORT A SAFETY CONCERN

We are committed to providing our students and staff with a safe learning environment.

If staff, students, or parents hear or see anything at any time that is a safety concern or a potential act of violence, please contact the school.

Also, Centennial School District partners with SafeOregon, which operates a school safety tip line available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can report tips any of the following ways:

For urgent matters or emergency situations, please call 911.

PARENT EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
In order for our emergency response plans to be effective, we must depend on the cooperation and assistance of many people, such as local police, emergency and fire departments. We also depend upon the parents of our students to support our efforts. Your cooperation is vital to helping us protect the safety and welfare of all children and school employees. Therefore, we ask parents to observe the following procedures during a crisis:

Please Do:

  • Check for communications from your child’s school. In the event of an immediate emergency that requires parental assistance, an automated message will be sent from the district or school to notify parents.
  • For non-emergency issues, parents/guardians can expect to receive an email from the principal.
  • Keep your contact information updated at ParentVUE and in the school office. Contact your student’s school office to make any changes.
  • Talk to your children. Emphasize how important it is for them to follow instructions from their teachers and school officials during an emergency.
  • If you see something, say something and encourage your children to do the same.
  • Call 911 to report suspicious incidents or behavior that is time-sensitive and requires immediate attention.

Please Don't:

  • Do not call or come to school. It is essential that the telephone system is available for emergency communications and streets/parking lots clear for emergency vehicles. Our first priority is to focus our attention on keeping students and staff safe, and follow up with parents with information (and instructions, if applicable) as soon as possible.
  • Post inaccurate or unverified information on social media.
