Dear Centennial Families,
This is to inform you that Centennial School District will cancel the school day for students on May 8, 2019.
Oregon Education Association (OEA) has designated May 8th as a statewide “Day of Action.” As you may have heard, many of the surrounding districts will also be closed on that day. Through our communication with Centennial Education Association (CEA) and our principals, we now have an estimate of how many teachers plan to be absent on that date to advocate for full funding of K-12 public schools. It is clear that the number of teacher absences will exceed our ability to safely open and operate our schools. The safety of our students is our highest priority. For that reason, all Centennial schools will be closed on May 8, 2019.
A few exceptions will apply:
• Outdoor School will remain open and uninterrupted the entire week of May 6-10.
• Previously scheduled A.P. testing will continue as planned on May 8.
As a result of this closure and several inclement weather days throughout the school year, we will be extending the school year by one additional day in June to compensate for lost instructional time. The last day of school for Centennial students will now be June 14, 2019 (Grade 8 is June 13, 2019).
For grade 12 students, the last instructional day for seniors at CHS is Friday, June 7, for seniors at CPS Wednesday, June 5, 2019, is the last instructional day.
We thank you for your flexibility as we work to minimize any impact on students due to the cancellation of school on May 8th.
Dr. Paul E. Coakley Superintendent
