Centennial hires two new elementary principals

The Centennial School District has announced the hiring of two new elementary school principals for the upcoming 2015 – 2016 school year.

Laura Nixon has been selected as the principal for Pleasant Valley Elementary School, and Jeb Hubbs has been selected as principal of Oliver Elementary School. Nixon replaces Laurie Ernstrom, while Hubbs replaces Laura Fendall. Both Ernstrom and Fendall are retiring after 35 years in the district.

Nixon has worked in the Centennial School District as a teacher since 1997. She has a bachelors degree in Communications and German from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Masters in Education from Pacific University. She has her administrative credentials from Lewis and Clark College. Most recently a teacher leader at Butler Creek Elementary School, Nixon has served as an interim principal when the school’s principal has been away from the building.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Pleasant Valley community beginning next year,” Nixon said “Pleasant Valley has an outstanding reputation with regards to staff, students and culture of the community. It will be a great privilege to serve Pleasant Valley Elementary School, and I look forward to meeting and getting to know everyone.”

Hubbs comes to the Centennial School District from Portland Public Schools, where this year he is the assistant principal of Sunnyside Environmental School. Last school year he was the assistant principal at Ockley Green Elementary School. He was the principal of the King-Chavez Community High School in San Diego, California, and a sixth grade teacher prior to coming to Portland. Hubbs has a bachelors of art degree in history from Willamette University and a Masters in Education Leadership from San Diego State University.

“I am very excited to join the Oliver Elementary community and carry on the strong work of Principal Fendall and her staff,” Hubbs said. “I believe that every child has the potential to achieve academic success, and I believe in the power of collaboration between staff, families, and students to help drive that success.”

“It is truly an honor and a privilege to serve as principal of Oliver,” Hubbs added, “and I will work hard alongside the rest of our staff to ensure that Oliver is a neighborhood school that the community is truly proud of and that supports the success of each child.”

Both Hubbs and Nixon’s first day as principals in the Centennial School District will be July 1, 2015.

Oliver Elementary School is located at 15840 S.E. Taylor, Portland. Pleasant Valley Elementary School is at 17625 S.E. Foster Road, Gresham.

The Centennial School District bridges the cities of Portland and Gresham, and is made up of 10 schools – a high school, middle school, seven elementary schools and an alternative school for high school students. The district serves approximately 6,300 students.
